Politics is the new Cricket

Men In Blue’s venture in South Africa didn’t exactly go the way they would have planned. A backlash by the fans was imminent. “Ghar me Sher, Baahar Dher”, “Chokers Abroad” type of compliments were on the cards. But much to delight to Dhoni and boys, all this drama back home was pretty toned down. For the first time in so many years, people were not paying full attention to their religion. Maybe because their God was gone. Wall and Dada were no more there. Or may be there was something else which is catching their attention now.

At 9 AM in the morning. Three guys sitting at the Nukkad tea stall. Sipping their cup of tea and giving their expert opinion on politics. No more comments on how Raina could have ducked that short ball or how Ishant was so wrong in pitching the ball up every now and then. Common man of India, of late, has moved from talking about Square Cut to talking about perils of direct democracy. “Why India can’t produce good bowlers” has changed to “Why India can’t produce good politicians”.

This is an age of paid media. And boy aren’t they doing their job well? I have seen at least a dozen of guys on my timeline, who were hailing Aam Aadmi Party one day and took a flip the very next day. And very soon again back to praising AAP for bringing revolution into India politics. And the events which triggered all these responses? A well authored news column or a nicely crafted blog post.

I don’t claim to be an expert in this, neither I blindly support or protest against AAP. I mean the guys have just come in. At least give them a chance and a substantial time frame to see if they could deliver or not. We are not going to be happy with the alternative anyways.

All this while, social media has been a very powerful tool for AAP. But slowly, things have started turning against them as well. The power of social media can’t be ignored. A place where a single tweet can create such a hurricane that Alok Nath turns into a rockstar overnight.

Anyways, it’s time for a drink or two. Over which maybe we could discuss how the changing political scenario will affect economy. Aye? 😛 😛
