A nightmare come true

Since the very beginning of the human race , one of the things which homo sapiens dread to the core is the one I was hit by a few days ago . It all started with my journey back to the college and the misfortune which occurred later in the morning could be blamed to the sleepless night I spent in the train .

When we landed arrived in Ghaziabad , it was too early in the morning by this city’s standards . Though Ghaziabad is claimed to be one of the 10 most developing cities of Asia , still you have to struggle for transport early the morning and rickshawaalas will charge you as high as they wish , and you could simply not protest . All you can do is surrender and empty your pockets . And that is what we were forced to do to reach the hostel .

My haunted room was so eagerly waiting for its master to return . I am still looking for any signs of paranormal activity in my room . I don’t know what I was thinking or what was wrong with the atmosphere , but as soon as I settled myself , instead of taking a nap I decided to try out this new baby of Microsoft , Windows 7 and there went the installation disk in the cd drive . Everything was on the right track . But with every single minute that ticked by , I was pushed deeper and deeper into that world of oblivion which refused my company few hours back . 20 minutes later , when “Expanding Files” still refused to go even a single notch over 0% , I gave up my arms and surrendered to the land of dreams that was pulling me .

4 hours later , the alarm clock suddenly woke me up . Struggling against my better conscience , which instructed me to go back to sleep , I managed to sit straight . As I gazed across the room trying to locate in which planet I was really in , I came face to face with the blank screen of my laptop . What really happened with this machine ? On stressing upon my memory , I remembered that under the hypnotizing power which took control over me , I switched the power off while the installation was under progress . Straight away the danger of what could have happened as the aftermath struck my mind .

With my fingers crossed , I switched it on . “ Please Please Please … This can not happen . “ But that very thing did happen . BootMgr missing . The system was unable to boot from either the hard disk or the cd drive . “C’mon Harsh . This is just a bad dream . Go back to sleep . It will be all fine when you wake up. “ I tried to follow my inner voice but sleep was very very far away from me now .  “Harsh . Pinch yourself . You will be right away .” But to no avail .

What to do now ??? One thing that always works no matter what has happened is that this thing “Ubuntu” never disappoints me . It loaded all right and the installation was not a big deal either . I sighed a sigh of relief . Maybe everything was not lost . A formatted hard disk was least I could afford . I mean , you don’t gather 250GB of data every other day . Sound of drums sounded so pleasing right there . Well everything was not that pleasing a few seconds later . Neither of the partitions except the ubuntu ext2 partition was showing up . I won’t go into further technical details now . I tried everything from head to toe , took my little kid to everyone I thought could be helpful , but all my efforts went to vain .

One of the most basics things which even a noob is aware of is “Always take a backup of all your important data “. My habit of procrastinating things did paid off . I tried each and every single thing but still was unable to recover my data . And here I am now , with brand new Windows 7 installed into my system and three brand new partitions with minimal of data . Its a reconstruction phase I am going through right now . All those projects , all my designs , all my scripts , all my snaps , all the passwords stored in firefox  …. RIP ….  :(     ….. 250GB … really a long long way to go . Wish me luck .
